Satisfactory Academic Progress Reminder

To be eligible for federal student aid, a student must show academic progress toward a stated degree goal. HCU checks academic progress at the end of each semester term. Students who fail to meet the standards for Satisfactory Academic Progress at the end of the semester term will be placed on suspension and will no longer be eligible to receive financial aid. Students who are placed on Suspension will be notified by via their Populi account. Students may re-establish their eligibility for financial aid consideration through the appeal process or by improving their academic standing in subsequent evaluation periods to satisfy the qualitative and quantitative sections of the Satisfactory Academic Progress policy. It is highly advisable that all students familiarize themselves with the University’s policy for Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Loan Entrance Counseling For Federal Direct Loans

Parents: Do not complete this step for your student!

Students, click HERE to be directed to the U.S. Department of Education (ED) website to complete the mandatory Loan Entrance Counseling Session. When completed, ED will send HCU a confirmation that the loan entrance counseling session is complete. It normally takes 48 to 72 hours for HCU to electronically receive this confirmation. Students should not send paper confirmation forms to HCU.

Students must complete the loan entrance counseling session in one sitting as there is not an option to save the session and return later.

  • Sign In using your FSA ID, which now replaces the old PIN. Don’t have an FSA ID? Create one now.
  • Select Complete Entrance Counseling.
  • Select your grade level. (Undergraduate or Graduate/Professional)
  • Complete the session/quiz.
  • Keep a copy of your completion for your records. Do not send to HCU unless requested by the Office of Financial Aid.

Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN)

Students, click HERE to Complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN) with the US Department of Education

  • The borrower taking out the loan must sign in using his/her own FAFSA PIN
    • For Federal Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized and Graduate PLUS use the student PIN
    • For Federal Direct Parent PLUS use the parent PIN
  • Find the Master Promissory Note section (see left hand tab)
  • Click Complete MPN
  • Click the applicable loan type
  • Follow progress bar to complete and submit MPN

Always use your full legal name and SSN as it appears on your social security card for the FAFSA, PIN and any loan documents. You must make corrections to these items before completing the MPN.

Who Must Complete a New MPN

  • New Students to HCU who want student loans
  • All HCU students who are first time borrowers

Information You Need:

  1. Borrower must have his/her FSA ID ready. Don’t have a new FSA ID yet? Create one now.
  2. Borrower’s NAME, SSN, Date of Birth entered on the MPN and FAFSA must match the same data in the FSA ID.
  3. Be ready to provide two references (name, address, and telephone number.) These should be people who have known the borrower for at least one year (preferably relative) who live at different addresses.
  4. Borrower’s name, date of birth and social security number (SSN) should be the same as it appears on the FAFSA and FSA ID.
  5. The MPN is the borrower’s promise to repay all student loans granted under this MPN. Signing the MPN does not obligate the borrower to take out a loan. The borrower is only responsible for loan funds they “Accept” each year.

Federal Direct Loan Exit Counseling

If you have a Federal Stafford Subsidized, Unsubsidized loan, Federal Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized and are now planning to graduate, leave school or drop below half-time, you must complete the loan exit counseling session online at the US. Department of Education’s NSLDS website. The NSLDS website will require you to enter your SSN and Federal FSA ID. You do not need to notify HCU when you have completed the loan exit counseling session.

Holds

A hold will remain on student records until the Exit Counseling is complete. Holds will prevent school registration and access to official transcripts. Students are encouraged to respond in a timely manner when instructed to complete the Exit Counseling Session.

Loan Repayment Options

Depending on your financial circumstances during repayment, you may want to consider different repayment options. Currently, there are four repayment options with the Income Based Repayment (IBR). Use the Loan-repayment calculator to compare your repayment options.

Loan Forgiveness

For information on loan forgiveness, you should review the web page of your prior federal student loan lender or the Department of Education. Some potential employers may also have loan forgiveness programs, be sure to add this item to the list of benefits you’re considering when accepting employment.
