FLORENCE, ALABAMA—Heritage Christian University proudly announces that Mr. Sonny Owens will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity honoris causa, recognizing his distinguished ministry career and significant contributions to the Lord’s church.

Owens faithfully served as a pulpit minister for over 35 years and continues as a fill-in preacher when needed. He has also been a visiting minister in nine states and with over 75 congregations.

Alongside his work in pulpit ministry, Owens has dedicated years of his life to making a positive difference in the lives of young people. He served as a board member for Challenge Youth Conference for 25 years, a teacher at Maywood Christian Camp for 10 years, and a volunteer with TITUS Youth Camp for 18 years. He has also served as a deacon, a relief house parent for the North Alabama Christian Children’s Home, and a substitute teacher at Mars Hill Bible School.

“Sonny Owens embodies servant leadership,” stated Nathan Daily, HCU Vice President of Academic Affairs. “His devotion to serving others, coupled with his infectious optimism and unwavering faith, exemplifies the highest standards of our institution. We are honored to recognize him.”

Throughout his respected career, Owens has been a beacon of light, always radiating positivity and compassion. His genuine kindness and tender heart have left an indelible mark on those around him, making him a beloved figure within the Shoals community and beyond.

Owens has been happily married to Jackie Owens for 52 years. They have two children, Kristi and Matt, and two grandchildren, Jake and Abby.

Sonny Owens is an exceptional man who has dedicated his life to serving others. His contributions to the church and the Shoals community are immeasurable, and it is an honor to recognize him with this well-deserved honor. The Honorary Doctor of Divinity will be awarded to Mr. Sonny Owens during the upcoming commencement ceremony at Heritage Christian University on May 4, 2024.
