HCU News for June 25, 2012

Heritage Christian University News for 6.25.12

Eleven have been baptized into Christ so far in the latest evangelistic emphasis on Christmas Island!  A group of twenty from the Killen Church of Christ, including Wayne and Charlotte Orr and Jess, Lori, and Brennan Eastep, worked with Randy and Sharon English and their family.  We look forward to even more great news.

President Jones spoke yesterday (Sunday, 6.24.12) for Friends and Family Day with the fine East Walker Church of Christ in Sumiton, AL.  Alumnus Barry Bennett continues to serve that congregation effectively as preacher.

Friends of the Overton Memorial Library is hosting a book sale this week, June 25-29, from 8:00 to 5:00 daily. Several items are duplicate copies from the library of Dr. Frederick W. Danker.  Prices:  $5 for hardbacks, $2.50 for paperbacks, and $0.10 for journals.  Buy two books and get a third of equal or lesser value free. New copies of Benefactor by Dr. Danker are $35 each. Benefactor cannot be a free book.

Congratulations to Larry Davenport who has been named Involvement Minister with the Tuscumbia Church of Christ. He will begin that new work on July 1.  We appreciate Larry’s service to HCU and wish him the very best in this new opportunity.

Congratulations to Dr. Ed Gallagher on his latest scholarly publication, “The Old Testament ‘Apocrypha’ in Jerome’s Canonical Theory,” Journal of Early Christian Studies 20 (2012): 313-33.

Congratulations to Dr. David Warren on his appointment as a fulltime professor in the VP Black College of Biblical Studies at Faulkner University.

T.I.T.U.S. Camp is almost here!  July 8-15 will be an outstanding time of growth and fellowship. Keep praying for leaders, counselors, and campers.
Continue to pray for Dr. Jeremy Barrier and family as they are in Germany for the first segment of Jeremy’s research as a Humboldt Fellow.  Jeremy emailed photos last week of himself with German President Joachim Gauck and with Humboldt President Helmut Schwarz.  It’s a rare honor to meet such world and academic leaders.

Keep in your daily prayers:  David Arny, Bob Bauman, David Blackwell, Eden Burleson, Austin and Betty Davenport, Jerry Davidson, Julie Frederick (daughter of John and Kathy Lawson), Sara Goldman, Randy Imel, Melanie Irions, Faye Johnson (Corandle’s wife), Lori Kashorek, Clara Credit-Kemp. Hobert May, Martha Polk, Ralph Richardson, Avery Shappley (daughter of board member Robert Shappley), Gail Stevenson, and Shirley Trousdale (grandmother of Ashley Hudson).

Keep praying for Maywood Christian Camp. So many young people are impacted in a very positive way each summer.  Our thanks to all who help lead that good work, including our own Perry and Tricia Bretherick.

Thought for the week: Some teachers link Isaiah 62:2 with Acts 11:26b.  “You shall be called by a new name which the mouth of the Lord will name…And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.”  Others link Isaiah 62:2 with Revelation 2:17b, “And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” Still others think of Revelation 3:12, “He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.”  We’re honored to wear the name of Christ on earth. We’ll be honored to wear the name of Christ in heaven. We’re blessed to be made new in name, heart, hope, and purpose by the God who loves and saves us.
