HCU News for January 9, 2012
The first week of spring semester generated notable energy on campus. New faces are always a welcome sight. Thanks much to Dean of Students Brad McKinnon and his team for helping the new students who are living on campus. Thanks to Bobby and Peggy Brewer for extra quick work with painting and preparation in the married student housing.
Congratulations to Dr. Justin Imel who has been chosen to preach for the Greenwood Church of Christ near Lawrenceburg, TN. We know Justin will be a blessing to these good brethren.
The January 2012 issue of Gospel Advocate includes a fine article by HCU alumnus Matthew Morine. “Parallels of Division Within the Restoration Movement” can be found on pages 34-35. That same issues includes “God’s Boundaries for Fellowship” by Doug Burleson, son our Dr. Ted Burleson.
Remember that we will continue registering both credit and audit students through the Drop/Add Date of Friday January 13. Encourage all who are willing to be encouraged!
We appreciate the work of Dr. Jeremy Barrier and all who helped with our first Master of Divinity Spiritual Formation Retreat last weekend. Excellent devotionals and lessons were followed by thoughtful discussions. All who attended were blessed.
The Florence chapter of the Heritage Associates will be meeting on campus today. Please welcome these outstanding supporters of Heritage Christian University.
Lori Eastep continues to make student, faculty, and staff IDs. If you have not yet seen Lori, please have your ID made ASAP.
Heritage Home School will be on campus this Friday. The home schoolers always bring BIG energy. We’re blessed to be allied with this fine group.
Please keep praying for David Arny, David Blackwell, Austin and Betty Davenport, Jerry Davidson, Sara Goldman, Gail Stephenson, and Mechelle Thompson. Pray for Michelle, sister-in-law of HCU Board Member Boyd Pate.
We received an encouraging email from alumnus Greg Swindle in Zambia. Greg appreciates our prayers as he begins his work of training evangelists in Mepepe.
Heritage Christian University will be closed on Monday 1.16.12 in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday.
The third annual Coil Lecture is set for Friday February 24 at 8:30 and 1:00 (different lectures) with Dr. M. Patrick Graham of Candler School of Theology, Emory University. The lecture title is “Reading the Chronicles of All Its Worth”. All are invited to attend, and there is no cost for attending.
Thought for the day: Many biblical truths exist in tension. Consider Proverbs 26:4-5. There are times and situations when a “fool” cannot be engaged wisely. Any attempt at correction or education will end poorly. But there are times and situations when a “fool” cannot be ignored rightly. Ignoring him only feeds his ego. There are times when “meddling in a quarrel” is both foolish and dangerous (Proverbs 26:17). But Matthew 5:9 states the counterpoint, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” What a blessing to rightly assess times and situations so that we can act appropriately. Surely we need God’s help with this (James 1:5).
